It is a cold, clear evening in Firmament. The winding backstreets of the city are sparsely populated at this time of day, since most honest beings are busy in the markets and inns of the city if they are not in their homes. But it looks like one rabbit has strayed from the beaten path and is moving furtively through the little traveled alleys.

A lone cloaked figure tailed the rabbit, the majority of their form covered and concealed as they follow the rabbit, waiting for the proper time to strike...

The rabbit seems to be unaware of any pursuit as he winds his way through the back streets. After a short trek, he stops at a shabby looking door and knocks a quick tattoo.

The cloaked figure follows behind the rabbit, stopping a short distance away and watching as they knock on the door, waiting to see what will happen from the shadows.

There is a short wait before the door opens and a hooded being steps out. "Well?" the shrouded figure asks in a smooth, male voice, "Anything to report?"

The rabbit shakes his head. "He has hardly left the inn in days," the lapine spy reports, "But I am starting to think he has some kind of sneaky way out, or an accomplice helping him. There are stretches where we seem to lose him completely. He just vanishes! And I am afraid that he has made one or two of us."

The cloaked figure bides their time, waiting for the rabbit to finish his report, silently eavesdropping on the conversation. So what the lynx had been saying was correct....

The cloaked being nods. "Fine," he murmurs, "Keep watching him." The being turns abruptly and disappears back through the door, leaving the rabbit alone in the alley. He blinks at the door as it slams in his face, then sneers at the closed door. "Fine for him maybe!," the rabbit snarls turning and stalking off, "He's not the one who has to run all these wild goose chases!" He stomps off through the cold evening toward a new destination, heading back toward more public parts of the city.

Markus decided that this was his chance. He needed to get the rabbit before he got out of the slums. He sped up, closing the distance between the rabbit and him, knife close to his hand as he drew nearer.

As the coyote hurries to close the distance, he musthave made some noise that alerted his quarry! The rabbit turns with a grimace on his face, diving out of the way of the attack before drawing two daggers of his own with a snarl. "You've caught me in a bad mood, dog!" he growls, "I think poking holes in you will make me feel better!"

Markus flips his knife around backwards, drawing a tomahawk-esque axe from inside his cloak, holding it backhand as he readies himself for head-on combat with the lapine spy. "I'm sure you might regret this... I was going to make it easy and quick."

The rabbit grins viciously, revealing that his incisors have been filed to a predatory point and lunges at Markus, weapons first!

Markus stands his ground, shrugging off his cloak now that it was unneeded. His canvas covered armor taking the hit on one of the hardened plates on his armor. He retaliates with an attempted jab up under the rabbit's ribs.

"Hah!" The rabbit crows, dodging the jab, "Too slow, Doggy!" He dances back out of reach and makes a rude gesture. "You think you got what it takes to knife me?" he sneers, "Not in the back or the front! A deaf rock coulda heard you coming!" The rabbit casually flips a knife in his hand to hold it by the blade between thumb and firefinger before flinging it at Markus!

Markus shifts, the knife burying itself into his armor. He yanks the knife out and throws it back, following up with a shot from his crossbow, the arrow bursting into flames as it traveled towards its target!

Both of Markus's shots go wide of his target as the rabbit bins and weaves about. "You're in way over your head puppy dog!" he chuckles nastily, "What numbskull hired you? Do you even know who you are up against?" The spy makes another lightning fast lunge with his wicked knife.

Markus once again tanks the hit, his armor holding again. He once again goes for the ribs, this time putting everything he had into driving his dagger up into the rabbit's stomach while the rabbit's knife was caught in his armor.

The lapine spy hisses and drops his knife, clapping a hand to his side, where a trickle of blood drips from a long gash from Markus's blade. He sneers at the coyote. "Eh. You got lucky, Dog," he snaps, backing away and pulling another knife fron his belt with his free hand, "But you made one, very big mistake."

Markus backs, quickly making to reload his crossbow. Damn this rabbit was tough!

The rabbit gives another malicious grin. "You assumed I was alone!" he hisses with sadistic glee just as a heavy wooden board comes down on Markus's head with a resounding CRACK! The world starts to spin. . .

Markus staggers, managing to stay upright and conscious. He put a hand to his head and looked back to the other assailant.

The rabbit cackles and wheezes at the coyote's predicament. "Don't mess with the San- the Sang- The Red Hand!" he shouts, "Five fingers, Doggy!" He looks like he would love to finish the job, but he staggers. Looks like he has lost a fair bit of blood. "Shut up, Clancy," the other being says, though his shape is rather blurry in Markus's concussed state, "Let's get you out of here before you die from that bug bite." He is definitely brown and probably a mammal, but that is all Markus can make out, dazed as he is.

Markus staggers to a nearby wall, watching them flee. He hoped that the rabbit would die from blood loss, as he tries to stagger out of the slums, where he was less likely to be jumped.

Markus had underestimated his enemy. This time. But any fight you can stagger blearily away from, right? At least he still has the coin for the job, with or without the mark.
