Fenris, in his current guise as Franklin, the Platypus is walking through the marketplace. Since he heard that the Fleshcrafters had come back to town, he had decided it was time for a change. "Maybe I just need to get back to myself," he mutters under his breath as he looks for the garish, striped tent, hoping that the rumors were true.
The tent is an easy find thanks to how much its colorful stripes stand out and because of the well dressed coyote loudly advertising its services. Some people have stopped to listen to his speech, while others pass with clearly annoyed expressions.
Fenris has worn some simple, nondescript clothing today, along with a hooded traveling cloak. Franklin stood out too much to vanish easily in his normal clothes. The big platypus works his way through the crowd and waves a hand to the coyote. "Me sir!" he calls out, "I could use a bit of a change."
"And change is what you shall receive good sir." The coyote looks the platypus up and down for a moment. "What can we do for you on this lovely day?"
Fenris hurries forward, closer to the coyote and passes a small pouch of lunar dust over. "Maybe I have had enough fun," he says, loud enough to be heard, but soft enough that it is not likely to carry, "I've had enough of this Beaver Duck business. Let's get inside.
Fenris is shown inside and the coyote follows quickly. "Well then," The merchant of change says, "Did you have something particular in mind, maybe a beaver or a duck, instead of being both?" The canine can't help but smirk at his own words.
Fenris ducks into the tent and shucks off his cloak, looking around at the familiar setup. "I confess," he says, as he looks the place over, "I was sort of thinking of being a tiger. . ." he looks a little uncertain, though. "I mean," he looks to the coyote, and then at his mole assisstant at the controls, "I think I am ready to go back."
The coyote rubs his chin. "A returning customer then! I am afraid I am not recognizing you, we had a lot of people coming through lately." He pauses. "Back to bases it is then? Are you sure you don't want to try something new?"
Fenris looks uncertain. If he had a proper lip to chew instead of that ridiculous bill, he would probably do it. "I might be tempted," he admits, "I mean, there are so many possibilities. What do you think? What would you be if you were going to. . . well, make a change?" He looks over to the mole at the controls, "What about you, Monty?" he asks.
The coyote chuckles. "If I wanted to make a change I would just do it! I mean I own the device, don't I?" The mole speaks up. "Something similar goes for me, really. Maybe you would like to try being a mole yourself?" "Or he could try the wheel. Yes. Monty! Get the wheel." The mole nods and wanders off, returning shortly with a huge wheel like you might know it from some carnivals, instead of prizes however, several animal names have been written on the field. "Care for a spin, sir?"
Fenris laughs that the wheel even exists. "Fine," he chuckles, "But if I don't like it, I can always just choose something else, right?" He reaches up and gives the carnival wheel a spin!
"Of course, of course. The wheel is not binding in any way." The coyote and the mole both watch the wheel spin and spin and spin, till it finally slows down, the needle pointing at the the word "Elephant."
Fenris looks thoughtfully at the wheel, the wheels in his own head turning. "Elephant, huh?" he murmurs, "Could I do elephant? It could be exciting. . ." The platypus seems pretty torn.
"Of course you can, we would not put things on the wheel that we can't do, would we?" "No, boss. We would not." "Is that what you pick then, good sir?"
Fenris finally laughs and shrugs. "Why not?" he says, deciding that for this sort of transformation he had best disrobe, "Elephant me!" The burly platypus takes off his clothes and neatly folds them before stepping up to the machine. "But!" he says, looking back toward Monty, the mole, "I need to have something interesting too. How can we spice up an elephant a little?"
The mole rubs his chin and eyes Fenris. "We could make you a pink elephant with huge ears. If that is your kind of spice." The coyote nods. "Or we can make those tusks extra large. You know what they say about guys with large tusks." He grins.
"Not pink, I think," Fenris says, "But tusks are good. And what about some hair? Most elephants are bald, I guess, but I like a little fluff, you know? And color is good, just not pink. Let's do this!" The platypus steps into the machine and braces himself, trying to stay relaxed.
The coyote ponders for a moment. "If you want large tusks and fluff, why not go mammoth instead? That way you have it both." He walks over to the controls and starts putting in some things, but does not start the machine yet.
"No," Fenris calls from within the machine, "Not a mammoth. Just an elephant. Don't want to go all ice age here in Firmament! It's too hot for that! Just do the best you can." He stands in anticipation. "Oh!" he calls, "And I want to be the kind of elephant with big, floppy ears, not the little ones."
More buttons are pressed and lights go on, noises are emitted and generally things start happening. Fenris is scanned quickly by the device and it is even quicker to start applying its creator "magic" to the platypus, who already finds himself without a bill and a rapidly growing nose.
Fenris has come to enjoy the strange, melty feeling of being fleshcrafted. It is probably not the best thing to list on a resume, though. "Enjoys having his genetic code rewritten," does not really get you through a lot of doors. While most beings would close their eyes in such a strange situation, Fenris watches with wonder as his nose stretches and grows and his thick, brown fur starts to slurp back into his skin. He resists the urge to flop his beavery tail in excitement!
Maybe Fenris should have acted on his impulse while he could, as now his tail shrivels up, till it is a mere string of flesh and muscle, with some hairs poking out of the end. With the fur now gone entirely from his body, Fenris' skin starts to change, getting darker and courser by the second. At the same time more and more nose spills out from his face, however it is not joined by any bones, making it a floppy meat tube that is slowly forming prehensile muscles.
Fenris does his best to hold still, despite the strange pins and needles feeling from his new appendage. He is curious to see what color they chose for his skin, though it is hard to make much out with only the light of the mathemagic to see by. His eyes cross a bit as he watches that huge trunk spill from his face. He must have a ways to go yet, since he did not really feel all that elephantine yet.
The skin keeps darkening till it settles on a navy blue, but with the deepest parts of the wrinkles that cover it all over a bright and friendly orange. The changes to his face continue, with the trunk now fully formed and the tusks starting to push through his skin, while his ears grow at a rapid pace.
