It is cool and windy in the early morning, and the sun is still low on the horizon. Here at the fringes of the marketplace, the distant sound of beings chatting and working is muted and the only sound is the flapping of the garishly striped canvas tent where the Fleshcrafters have just finished setting up. A coyote in a loud, red and white striped suit has just ducked out of the tent to look for potential customers.
Crux strode through the market, jaw tense as he looked around. He patted at the pocket on his kilt, checking the contents and the lunar he carried with him. "Is it bad that I'm nervous? Are we even sure they're..." He asked his Lapine companion before seeing the tent. He squared his shoulders and walked towards the coyote. "I heard there's a fleshcrafter around here, you the one doing it?"
Molly scurried along at Crux's feet, one hand gripping onto his kilt to keep him close. "I'm nervous too, but it's gonna be alright honey." She scans around, hopping up to see the tent a bit better, before nodding toward it. "It'll be alright!"
The Coyote turns and instant salesman's smile on Crux. "Not A Fleshcrafter, my boy!" he says, "THE Fleshcrafter! The one and only miracle machine! Step, right up! You in the market for a change, my good man?" His eyes flicker to Molly and back to Crux, "Making a little change for the little lady are we?" he asks, "Happy to oblige, happy to oblige! Five little ounces of lunar dust gets you the change of a lifetime!" The grinning canine holds out a well manicured hand.
Crux grinned and looked back down at Molly, smile growing wider before looking back to the coyote and nodding. "Yep, little lady deserves it." He reaches down into the pouch and pulls out a glass vial, shaking it from side to side before placing it in his hand. "Five ounces then. where do you want me?"
Molly smiles nervously, caught off guard by the coyote's beaming enthusiasm. She opens her mouth to speak, but nothing comes out, and she instead lets out an anxious giggle as her ears fold over, pink with blush. "Change of a lifetime, for sure," she mumbles.
The Coyote hawker happily accepts the vial of glittering dust and makes it vanish somewhere in his garish coat. "Right this way, sir," he says, leading the way to the tent and holding the flap open.
Inside is a wide, open space with another, much smaller tent in the middle, apparently made to hide the machine itself from view. There is a large, open box sticking out one side that almost screams, "Enter Here," and a large mole that sits at a small, glittering panel of controls. "Now," the Coyote says, "What will it be? The only limit here is your imagination! What do YOU want to be?"
Crux smiles at Molly and reaches down to rub at her ears. "It'll be okay, better than okay when we're done." He nodded towards the tent before entering. He looked at the box and steps up to it. He glances over to the coyote. "A rabbit, maybe a foot shorter than I am now. I want to keep the mane, I like my fur long, don't care what color it is. Why don't you pick Molly?"
Molly lowers her head slightly, glancing over both shoulders before she follows the men into the tent. She fidgets nervously as they go over what he'd like to be, frowning as she's asked for her opinion. "It's your fur!" she replies, grabbing bunches of her dress to hold it down whilst her tail flicks anxiously, batting it around. "I can't pick."
"Fine! Fine!" the Coyote says, ushering Crux into the box, "You just hold still, right in there. I'm told the sensation is strange, but it won't hurt a bit!" He closes up the doors, leaving the Muskox in the dark, then saunters back to Molly.
"Now, little lady," he grins, "Why don't you just come over here and describe your perfect man to me, hmm?" He leads her gently by the arm to stand next to the mole at the controls who is fiddling with knobs and dials and buttons. It looks like he has set things up for rabbitiness and for the requested height, but he looks expectantly to Molly for her input.
Crux smiles and shakes his head. "You gotta look at it. I want you to be happy with it," he said before stepping into the box. He takes a wide stance and stands perfectly still, looking around inside. "I don't gotta take off my clothes, do I?" He yells out.
Molly is led along to the controls, eyes wide as she looks over them. "M-my perfect man?" she asks, tugging at one of her floppy ears, scuffing her boots of the ground. "Well, u-uh.. I'm not sure.." She rubs her chin, looking off distantly as she thinks. "Keep him big and handsome, uh.. maybe.. a nice brown color, would be okay?" She sounds uncertain, her voice soft and timid, and she gives a little shrug after speaking.
"No sir!" the Coyote calls out, "No need to strip. Just be patient for a moment while we make some final adjustments." Funny he should say that, since he does not seem to do anything but watch while the mole works.
The mole makes a few more adjustments. "Is that all, Miss?" he asks in a low, slow voice, "Only I can do just about anything, you know. You want some patterns, maybe? Extra thick fur? Smell like strawberries? You like big ears? Or feet? Or teeth? Or. . . other things?" He nods at the panel of winking lights in front of him. "You just say the word and I'll press go."
Crux closes his eyes and gives his head a subtle nod. He grins as he hears Molly's description, then chuckles at the words from the mole. "I'm sure she'd love for me to no longer smell a locker room." He closes his eyes and sighs. "Feel free to tell him whatever you want. So long as I keep my mane I'm good... and, you know, still being a man."
Molly nods in agreement with the ox in the box. "Manhood, uh.. that's a must, and his mane.." She looks down at herself, considering for a moment before giving a shrug. "I'm sure he will turn out fine, just being a regular rabbit. Don't know if he needs any embellishments." She looks up to the mole and shrugs. "Well, I'd say go."
The mole nods and makes a few last adjustments, then mashes his hand down on the big red button.
Within the box, a million mathemagical equations suddenly burst into radiant life, spinning and swiriling around the massive bovid within. There is a sudden sense of falling and vertigo as he drops more than a foot in height, though his shoulders remain broad and his body thick and strong. The ox's skin tickles and itches as his fur becomes softer and finer, shortening across most of his body, but growing out thicker and fluffier around his face and head. Looks like this is really happening!
Crux takes in a deep breath, muscles tightening as he hears Molly giving the mole the go ahead. His head swims as he shrinks down, pushing aside a desire to shift his stance and open up eyes. The tickle across his skin makes a cheek muscle twitch, but he exhales, trying to stay calm and relaxed from the foreign sensations.
Molly opens her eyes wide as she watches the mole smack that button, bouncing excitedly on her feet as she awaits the appearance of a transformed Crux. "Is that alright?" she asks the mole nervously, her boots thumping off the ground and she shuffles side to side.
There is a bizarre, stretching sensation as Crux's floppy cow ears migrate atop his head and thicken and stretch into tall, expressive rabbit ears and his boxy bovine face melts into a twitchy, rabbity nose with prominent buck teeth.
From the other end, his powerful cloven hooves are softening into wide, floppy paws as his thighs thicken under his kilt and his long, ropey tail retreats and reforms into a fluffy flag over his thick derrier. Long, fine whiskers sprout from the new rabbit's twitching muzzle and as a final touch, a powerful scent of oranges fills the little pod just before the lights wink out and the door springs open!
Crux lets out a shuddering sigh as bones reshape, his nose wiggling at its smaller and nearer placement on his face, ears twitching as they stand above his head. He remains still until his hooves reshape, rolling a pad and wiggling his new toes. His ears twitch and he slowly opens his eyes with the sound of the door opening.
