Spotted Screecher

Named for the loud, annoying noise produced when they rub their wings together, screechers are long-bodied insects not unlike grasshoppers or locusts. Annoying pests that can do considerable damage to crops, especially in large numbers, screechers reside in temperate climates and are active during the hot season when they seek to breed, setting forth in clouds that strip whole areas clear of plant matter.

Some small consolation is that the insects may be captured and eaten raw or cooked, but it is indeed small consolation for the smallholder who's just lost this year's maize crop to the pests.
