The rainfall that's been terrorizing the city lately hasn't quite died out just yet, though it's a bit lighter today than it has been recently. If anything, the rainfall combined with the proximity to a good source of water make the beach an ideal training ground for practicing maths involving fire.
Near the water's edge, draped in a rust orange cloak embroidered with protective maths, the badger mathemagician stands, prepared to assist the kite with his control issues, though he's not too sure how helpful this might be.
Soon enough, Trace is approaching, looking hesitant as ever, and mumbling to himself. He seems to be a tad twitchy as usual, and his feathers are soon smoothened against his skin as he looks out over the beach.
Soon enough, he's found his way towards the badger, mumbling softly and twiddling his thumbs. "S-so... I... I suppose I'm supposed to mess up so we can see where things go wrong?" he mumbles, twitching lightly as he looks out over the beach.
Cedric watches the avian's approach, giving a quick wave in greeting. "That's the general idea for now, yes. You just need to relax and focus." the badger says, "And try to let go of any self-doubt you might have." he adds, nodding slightly.
"Oh, and like I said at the inn, don't worry about killing me. I'll bounce back from a fatal injury, but if it happens we'll have to stop because I won't be able to revive from it again so soon." he explains. "I don't think it'll come to that, but hopefully it might help you to know I have the sacred phoenix family running through me."
A mumble, a nod as Trace looks out over the waterside, before drawing a few spells in the sand. Simple enough, a modified Flame of the Creator, materializing in a trio of fireballs that are quickly sent out over the water, where they eventually dive under harmlessly. "Those... Those are easy enough," Trace mumbles, soon after repeating a similar process with cutting winds. "It's... When I start making them bigger... Or combining them, that's when the problems start."
Cedric keeps an eye on Trace's spells as he casts them, taking stock of the bird's technique and finding nothing wrong with it, though it looks like kevinscoping to him, something he's not had much practice with as he can grasp the numbers in his mind. He won't point out the obvious, that spells become harder to control when increasing the intesity, it's a given that every mage knows.
"Wonderful!" he exclaims, anyhow. "Right, you don't have a problem with the basics that I can see, there's no problem with the technique, as you said." he says, gesturing towards the river himself without tracing anything, recalling and forgetting the proper equations silently and sending a Battlefield Purification spell dancing above the waters before it sinks and dissipates leaving nothing but steam. "You know that spell, right? Can you show me yours?"
"That... That's the thing. Mine are either very successful, or... Very unsuccessful, depending on how you look at it," he mumbles, tracing the equations in the air and, only shortly after that, the spell sets a large part of the beach directly surrounding him ablaze... A large part, which includes the part of the beach he and Cedric are standing on. Those flames are awefully close, too.
The fire spell seems to have missed whatever Trace's intended target was, and instead seems to threaten the both of them with burning fury! Once again, Cedric quietly runs through the math in an attempt to put out the flames by dousing them with river water. However, the flames prove slightly difficult to extinguish, but he manages to at least clear out a small path for them to step away from the flames. "Alright, concentrate! You got this. You can snuff them out just as easily as you summoned them, using fire math. You got this, Trace!"
Trace mumbles and nods, twitching as he looks at the fire, which seems to be dying down in most places. Sure, there's some rather huge fires he doesn't seem to be able to control, but at least most of the sand isn't burning anymore. It's a good thing today's a cold day and no-one's at the beach, really... "I... I can't get those two down," he mutters, pointing at the two largest flames still remaining.
The badger looks honestly quite impressed with Trace's performance, quite a compliment. It was no small feat to get even that much of the fire put out. Still, it wouldn't be a great idea to leave what remains to its own devices, even on the beach in the rain, magical fire can be fairly unpredictable at times.
"Not bad!" Cedric throws a compliment to the kite, reaching forward with both hands and concentrating. He's not panicking quite like the bird, so he finds it a little easier to work the math, considering his decent heat resistance. The rest of the flames begin to die down until only a few embers and smaller, not-so-troublesome flames remain sizzling as the rain falls upon them. Those seem harmless enough to leave, and will likely die out on their own not long from now.
Cedric finishes the math and nods approvingly. "Alright. You still with me? You're doing great, and you were able to get a slight misfire back under control, you see?" he smiles a little, it seems genuine. "The divine math is a gift given to us by our creators, and they wouldn't have given it to us were we unable to control it." he scratches his cheek, trying to think of what should come next. To Trace, he asks, "How about another spell? Something you have difficulty controlling? I'll be ready to get it under control if it goes awry, so how 'bout it?"
A meek nod, a mumble, and Trace sets to drawing another kevinscope, and sparks dance between his fingers in the process, and the kite looks... Focused. Hesitant, but focused. Soon enough, the lightning is jumping between his fingers, then his hands, until suddenly, a sharp bolt heads... Well, nowhere. Up, mostly. That can't have been his intention.
The badger observes the Kite's kevinscoping with a keen eye, studying the movements intently to watch for any mistakes. Although he's no stranger to the practice, it's not one he's employed much beyond his first years in the academy.
Watching the lightning spark and crackle and whatever it is electricity does before shooting upward, he has a sort of blank look on his face, before grinning. "Well, it didn't hit anyone, at least?" he offers, not-so-helpfully. "I know, a short amount of time practicing isn't going to help you out much. It'll likely take a long time for you to get control over these things, but I'm not gonna give up." he says, holding up a hand, pointing his finger outward before facing away from Trace. "Here, watch my movements closely, very closely." the badger says with an encouraging tone, and carefully traces his own kevinscope in the air, something he rarely does. He takes the time to draw it out properly, trying not to rush it and show off. That's not the point of the exercise. Then again, perhaps a little showing off during a later practice session might inspire the avian to try and compete with him for superiority. It's how it's done in Cliffside, anyhow.
Once his pattern is complete, a ball of sparking electricity forms at his fingertip. Very compact, and very well controlled. He sends the bolt of lightning travelling over the riverbend and off into the horizon over the Aqua Magna, never to be seen again. He only hopes that he didn't strike some poor fisherman with it...
"But... I made the exact same kevinscope," Trace mumbles with a blink, watching the motions of the badger and mumbling to himself. "I... I don't get it... I really don't get it," he mumbles with a frown, silently peering out over the water.
"Exactly, it's not the kevinscoping that's the problem, you see?" Cedric explains, unsure of how to put it into words. "My thought is it stems from something in you, messing with the math, perhaps? Perhaps emotional? You did mention troubles in the past." he suggests, looking out over the water and trying to get a sense of the time from the sun past the clouds, still worrying about whether or not he mistakenly fried a boat of fisherbeings. "Well, anyway. Today wasn't a disaster. We'll figure out the root of the problem eventually." He pats Trace on the back and continues. "I'm afraid that's all the time I've got for the day, but I really think you're on the right track, for what it's worth? Take care, and keep practicing, alright? You want to impress Lady Sveta, no?" he gives the kite a knowing wink and hurries off back towards the maritime distance before he can face any reprecussions from his teasing!
"Y-yes," Trace mumbles as he listens to Cedric, not quite seeing the tease, though again, affirming that he does, in fact, want to impress Lady Sveta. Taht, and he wants to figure out why magic gives him so many troubles. "I... I'll head back to the inn for a bit," he mumbles, nodding faintly.
