The Ledger of Alexander Crane, Entry 1

Ah, my darling Violet. How I adore the sound of your voice, the scent of your perfume. I can scarcely believe I have courted you now for three years, and I am overjoyed that soon we shall be married. I can not wait until I can carry you across the threshold and into our new home. I can not wait to see the delight on your face when you see the manor I have purchased out in the countryside. I have worked hard – so very hard – to give you every luxury you deserve. How I miss the blush of your cheeks as we whisper to one another at the galas, how I miss the coy glances as we hold hands, walking in the gardens of your father’s estate. Soon however, we will have a place of our own, just you and I.

The Ledger of Alexander Crane, Entry 2

Captain Witherspoon is very happy with my designs. I have crafted a new Core, one that can copy the memories of his soldiers, allowing one mind to become more than one automaton. Each copy will be connected, synchronised with one another so that they can operate together in harmony. A unit who knows what one another thinks, so that they can fight efficiently. Many bodies, but a single mind. I have the automatons ready, I have crafted a synthetic skin to cover them, so they do not look like crude machines, but more like soldiers. Perfect – but not too perfect! – so that our enemies will be disturbed by these soldiers that fight as one.

The Ledger of Alexander Crane, Entry 3

The drunken sot! My Violet, crushed. I held her hand, heard the short, sharp, pained gasps as she shuddered, broken under the hooves of that vile beast! Jon William. I will remember that name. I have secreted my dear, dying Violet in the lab at our manor. Oh, we were supposed to be so happy when I carried her over the threshold! She rests now, asleep as I work. So much to do! I can not repair her body, I am not a doctor! But I can give her a new body. A perfect body. I can move her mind into my new Core, and she will live once again!

The Ledger of Alexander Crane, Entry 4

My lovely Violet sleeps. I can not let her know what it is I have done. That bastard, William. I will have my revenge for what he has done. I have copied myself into a Core, and I have sent my double off to deal with that drunken murderer. My poor Violet can never know what I have done. She should never find out.

The Ledger of Alexander Crane, Entry 5

My revenge is complete. And soon my lovely Violet will awake. Captain Witherspoon has grown impatient with my delays, but soon it will not matter. My Violet will live once more, and we will be together again. I have done all I can for her, seen to her every need. Her new body, all copper and chrome, is lovely – a sight to behold.

The Ledger of Alexander Crane, Entry 6

What did I do wrong? My poor Violet! She looked upon herself – and the scream – such a poor, agonized scream! I have tried to console her, but there seems to be nothing I can say, nothing I can do for her! I will try to help her cope with her new body once I have returned. The Captain’s funeral is today, and I must pay my respects. Such a terrible accident! I hope that this does not place my contract in jeopardy. I will be speaking with Captain Taylor tomorrow.

The Ledger of Alexander Crane, Entry 7

Someone has been in my lab! Things have been moved around, my notes have been shuffled and sifted through, and my tools have been used! But who knows about my lab? My poor Violet seems to be recovering however. She has grown accustomed to her new form, and it fills my heart with joy that she speaks with me again. She seems to be quite pleased with the manor, and while I am sad we can no longer marry, at least we are together once again. She is a little distant, perhaps distracted, but I can understand – considering her circumstances. I will give her time.

The Ledger of Alexander Crane, Entry 8

Caught! I found my automaton working in my laboratory. It denied doing anything wrong, and I carefully examined everything to be certain. I questioned it severely, but I admit, I am puzzled. What was it trying to accomplish? I will dwell more on this matter at another time.

The Ledger or Alexander Crane, Entry 9

I followed my automaton, crept through my own manor like a common burglar. I did not know what to think, seeing it visiting my darling Violet’s room. I listened at the door, and heard her laughter. It has been so long since I heard her laugh! The two talked for hours, but in voices too low to hear. Tomorrow, I believe I will need to question my automaton.

The Ledger of Alexander Crane, Entry 10

Love? Love! What does a machine know of love? The automaton dares to say it loves my darling Violet! I would have taken an axe to the abomination, but it has fled into the night. I went to my dear Violet to speak with her, and upon hearing of the machine and its words, she wept. I consoled her as best I could, and promised that it would never harm her. She rests now, and I know she will feel better tomorrow, once the thing has been dismantled and she is safe once more.

The Ledger of Alexander Crane II, Entry 1

The poor creator. He was obviously beyond reason. I did what I had to do, and now he can know rest. Poor Violet, she has been through so much, but when I visited her once more, she was so very happy to see me. We talked through the evening, and deep into the night. So many things to share! We have shed our weak, frail bodies, and can now live happily together until the end of days. My darling Violet, it is so good to hear you laugh, to see your smile. I am not quite complete, there are still details missing from my new form, but soon, you and I will look much as we did in life, but only perfected in copper and chrome.
