Soulgems can be considered to have a 'grade'. The grade of a gem determines how often skills and abilities will be found in a gem. A soulgem of a lesser grade is usually weaker, but this is not always the case. A soulgem that provides fewer, but more significant, abilities is possible.

Grade 0

The most common example of this grade are parent soulgems.
